1. Look for the 925 stamp
The first and easiest check is the stamp. Genuine sterling silver is marked 925 somewhere on the piece, usually on the clasp, the earring post, the inside of a ring or the back of a pendant. The number 925 means the metal is 92.5 percent pure silver, blended with 7.5 percent copper for strength because pure silver is too soft for daily wear. A real stamp is crisp and does not wipe away. No stamp at all, on a piece sold as silver, is a reason to ask more questions.
2. Try a magnet
Real 925 sterling silver is not magnetic. Hold a fridge magnet or a stronger neodymium magnet near the piece. Genuine silver will not be pulled toward it. If the body of the piece jumps to the magnet or sticks, it is made of a magnetic base metal and is not silver. A tiny tug from a steel clasp spring is normal, but the main body of true silver stays still.
3. The ice cube test
Silver is one of the best everyday conductors of heat. Place an ice cube on the piece and another on a coin or a table. The cube on real silver starts to melt noticeably faster because the metal pulls heat into the ice. It is a simple kitchen test and a fun one to show a doubtful gift receiver.
4. Listen for the ring
Gently tap a silver piece against a hard surface or flick it with a fingernail. Genuine sterling silver gives a clear, high, bell like ring that lingers for a moment. A fake or heavily plated base metal tends to give a flat, dull thud with no ring. This works best on solid pieces like bangles, coins and heavier pendants.
5. Use your nose
Pure and sterling silver has almost no smell. If a piece gives off a strong metallic, sulphur or coin like odour, it usually means there is a high amount of copper or other base metal, which points to low purity or a non silver alloy. Real 925 silver should be close to odourless.
